A late publish because the internet went down last night.
We enjoyed our extra day on Kos, going for long walks and spending the afternoon in the castle.
Picture 1 - There is a fleet of little fishing boats that go out every morning and are returning by the time we finish breakfast.
Picture 2 - The entire catch of one boat. We can't work out how they make a living.
Picture 3 - Helen thought it would be a good idea to try a paddle in the Agean Sea, after reading that in July and August its 27C here. She assures me it's not at the moment, more like Oreti Beach temperature.
Picture 4 - We spent about 4 hours in the Crusader Castle. It was sunny and quite and we had it all to ourselves. It has two parts, the 12th century original castle in the middle and the 14th century extension. This is helen walking down the 12th century bridge into the old castle.
Pictures 5 & 6 - There were lots of these plagues with accompanying crest set into the walls.
Picture 7 - A loo with a view on outer wall.
Picture 8 - Helen in one of the internal passage ways in the wall. We happened to have a torch with us so were able to explore some dark passages that led into vaulted rooms. No windows in most.
Picture 9 - Archers position on battlements. On the 14th century wall every second position was set up for canon.
Picture 10 - Canon and balls.
Picture 11 - Me on one of the 12th century towers that was made out of recycled blocks from Greek and Roman times.
Picture 12 - Helen sitting in a canon slot with our hotel in the background.
Picture 13 - More Greek Islands. Tomorrow we catch a ferry to Patmos. We check out of our hotel at midday and have to amuse ourselves until sailing time at 8.30pm. The forecast is for rain so that's not helpful. Arrive at Patmos at 11.30pm. The ferries we have seen are the size of the cook straight ones. Haven'ta clue if there is internet there so this might be the last blog for a few days. We come back to Kos on the 15th for a night as our journey home begins so will catch up then.
Picture 14 - In the castle there are quite a number of these plaques from the Greek period. I can pick up one or two words from my NT Greek but it is in a different dialect. With my books at home might be able to work it out though. It is probably a temple inscription.
